Breaking the news" is telling the story for the first time. Example: "It is the goal of every great reporter to break the news." "News" is new information that people need to hear; you "break the news" when you tell the news story that people have not yet heard. Example: "Walter Cronkite was a great reporter for many years. He was always breaking the news." You are "breaking the news" when you are the first to tell a news story that people do not know. Example: "When I told them that Chris had died, I did not know that I was breaking the news."
